Some diabetics shy away from the idea of juicing because they are normally advised not to drink the juice. The juice is often high in sugar or carbs and does not provide any reasonable health benefits for diabetic patients. However, there is a big difference between drinking store-bought juice and juicing.

The major differences come from the ingredients used and the way they are prepared. Juicing gives the patient complete control over the ingredients they use. This means they can use more vegetables than fruits. This is better because the vegetables introduce the nutrients they need to stay healthy without adding unwanted sugar and carbs.

Of course, fruits should not be avoided altogether. There are some fruits that are extremely healthy if consumed in the right amounts, even for diabetics. Using a recipe that is comprised primarily of vegetables with a few fruits can help reduce the severity of some diabetic symptoms and lower the risk of developing related health conditions.

Here is what a healthy juice recipe looks like for a diabetic.

Tangy B6 Booster

  • 10 Brussels sprouts
  • 1½ cups of string beans
  • ½ of a whole carrot
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 peeled lemon

This particular recipe has multiple benefits for someone with diabetes. The Brussels sprouts and the string beans are the primary ingredients. Both of these vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin B6. This vitamin has been shown to be particularly helpful when it comes to fighting symptoms that stem from diabetes.

Diabetic neuropathy is a severe form of nerve damage that occurs in patients who suffer from diabetes. It occurs when high blood sugar injures the nerve fibers in the body, typically in the feet and the legs. It may also be caused by a deficiency in B vitamins, such as vitamin B6 or B12. This juice recipe will help reduce the risk of developing this condition.

The carrot is the second most important ingredient in the recipe. It adds a bit of flavor to the juice, but also helps improve eye health and regulate blood sugar levels. However, despite being a good regulator of blood sugar, it is actually fairly high in sugar. That is why you should limit your intake to only one-half of a carrot each day. If you are experiencing high blood sugar levels already then you may choose to leave this ingredient out of the recipe.

Other Ingredients To Consider

There are some other healthy greens that are beneficial for anyone suffering from diabetes. These ingredients can be interchanged with the carrot, cucumber, and lemon. The taste will be affected, but you just may find a unique taste that you really enjoy. Consider using:

  • Watercress
  • Asparagus
  • Cabbage

As for fruits that would be acceptable, a green apple is often a healthy choice. A green apple is low in sugar and high in healthy nutrients. It also helps that they taste delicious and can add some great flavor to a primarily vegetable juice.

Monitor Blood Sugar

When juicing with recipes that include fruits, carrots or other sources of sugar, it is important to monitor you blood sugar levels. Drinking a single juice each day can be a healthy source of vitamins and nutrients. Limiting the number of fruits will help control the amount of sugar in the juice.
